David spent his first 18 years in Clinton, Iowa. Upon graduating from high school, David attended Grinnell College in Iowa where he received a BS degree in Business Administration. David was quite the athlete, playing on both the football and basketball teams at Grinnell.

David and Jean were stationed in many locations throughout his career, including California, Illinois, Hawaii, Maryland, Michigan, and Virginia. While serving in the Navy, David earned a Master of Business Administration and a PhD in Economics from the University of Michigan. After this second retirement, never one to be idle, David went to work as a government contractor for 15+ years before he finally and officially retired from the workforce.
David attended Bush Hill United Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, Virginia for 45 years, where he served as an Elder and the Clerk of Session for several of those years.
