David Brown Thompson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, musician, and man of deep faith, was born on April 6, 1945, in Philadelphia to Margaret Thompson and David Brown, and was lovingly raised by Edward Newman. His life was shaped by humble beginnings, extraordinary talent, steadfast love for family, and an unwavering commitment to his purpose.

Eldest of thirteen siblings, David grew up in a home filled with laughter, strength, and a sense of community that would shape who he became. He began his education at Lady of Blessed Sacrament, a place that helped foster his discipline and character. He later attended Roman Catholic High School, but his passion for music soon led him down a different path.

At just 17 years old, David made the life-changing decision to hit the road as a professional musician. He quickly established himself as a gifted drummer (known as one of the best in the city of Philadelphia), eventually traveling the world and performing with various artists, honing his craft and building a reputation that would carry him into musical history.

David's musical journey reached new heights when he became the lead drummer and a founding member of the Philadelphia-based funk band People's Choice. The original lineup included:

David Thompson – drums and percussion
Frank Brunson – lead vocals and keyboards
Valerie Brown – background vocals
Donald Ford – bass
Darnell Jordan – guitar
Johnnie Hightower – guitar
Stan Lathan – percussion
James Lloyd – keyboards (later addition)
In 1975, the band's breakout single, "Do It Any Way You Wanna," became a national sensation, earning a Gold Record and cementing their place in funk music history. This achievement helped propel the band-and David's career-to new heights, opening doors to more stages, fans, and opportunities than he ever dreamed of. David's drumming laid the rhythmic foundation of a generation, and his legacy continues to influence musicians across genres.

In the midst of his musical success, David remained grounded in love and family. He met and fell in love with Brenda Jean Durricks, his lifelong partner and soulmate. Their union blossomed into 38 years of marriage and over 50 years of shared love, marked by mutual respect, laughter, partnership, and unwavering devotion. Together, they built a strong and joyful home, becoming a beacon of love for everyone around them.

David was the devoted father of eight children: Thomas, Earl, Davida, Andre, Gloria, Terrell, Lyric, and Dariya. He took great pride in raising a family that reflected his values-kindness, creativity, and compassion. He was also a proud grandfather to 22 grandchildren and had several great-grandchildren, all of whom were his heart's greatest joy. Nothing made him happier than being surrounded by his family during holidays, birthdays, and Sunday dinners.

In 2006, David made the most meaningful decision of his life when he gave his life to Christ at House of Prayer Evangelistic Ministries under the guidance of Pastor Emily Essex. His walk with God brought him peace, clarity, and strength, and it was reflected in the way he loved, served, and uplifted others. His faith was a guiding force in his later years and a source of great comfort to those closest to him.

Outside of music and faith, David lived life with energy and intention. He enjoyed tennis, swimming, cooking, dining out, and most of all, spending time with his family. His culinary skills were legendary-his meals were made with love and always served with a side of storytelling and laughter. Known for his generosity, David was the kind of man who would give the shirt off his back or lend a hand without hesitation. He lived to bless others.

David Brown Thompson leaves behind a rich and meaningful legacy-one of rhythm, resilience, family, faith, and generosity. His influence echoes through the beats of funk music, the laughter of his children and grandchildren, and the memories of everyone who had the privilege to know him. His eldest son Thomas Thompson carries his musical legacy as a drummer and musician. David passed away peacefully in the loving arms of his wife on the morning of June 3, 2025, surrounded by love and the life they built together.

He will be forever missed, joyfully remembered, and eternally cherished.

There will be a viewing Tuesday morning June 17, 2025 from 8:00 am to 10:00 am at Lighthouse of Deliverance Church, Lindenwold. Funeral Service to immediately follow at 10:00 am.
