David A. Voight Sr., 83, residing in Sandusky, passed away Sunday evening, June 29, 2025.
He was born on February 18, 1942 in Sandusky, Ohio to the late Alden Edward and Ione (Wheeler) Voight.
David graduated from Sandusky High School in 1960 where he earned All-Ohio honors as an offensive center and a football scholarship to the University of Michigan. He received his Bachelor's degree in 1964 and his MBA from the U of M Ross School of Business in 1965.
After graduating from the University of Michigan, David worked for Manufacturers National Bank in Detroit, Michigan. He later joined The Central Security National Bank and The City Bank in Lorain, Ohio. He spent the remainder of his career at Citizens Banking Company, now Civista, where he served as president from 1992 until his retirement in 2007. He then served as chairperson of the bank's Board of Directors.
In 2005, David was inducted into the Sandusky High School Athletic Hall of Fame and in 2007 was inducted into the Erie County Chamber of Commerce Gallery of Achievers for business and community service. He attended St. John's Lutheran Church of Union Corners. Behind the scenes, David used his financial expertise in the service of others.
The most significant community involvement for David was as a valued Trustee of Firelands Regional Medical Center Board (Firelands Health). His service from 1976 until retiring from the Board in 2017 included leadership roles on the Executive, Finance, and Governance Committees among others.
David's universe was his family. He was a super fan of his sons' activities and sports and later could be seen in the auditoriums, bleachers, and sidelines supporting his grandchildren. David was an avid golfer and enjoyed rounds with family and friends. He was also a tireless supporter of the University of Michigan and fan of the Wolverines.
David is held dear by his wife of fifty-six years, Ann Schlessman Voight, whom he married on June 21, 1969. He is cherished by his sons and daughters in law–David and Jen Voight Jr. of Sandusky, Ohio and Jonathan and Erin Voight of Rocky River, Ohio–and his beloved grandchildren Jacob, Zachary, Genevieve and Evan Voight. He is lovingly remembered by extended family and countless friends and colleagues.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to contribute in David's honor may do so to St. John's Lutheran Church, 106 Scheid Rd., Sandusky, Ohio 44870, the Schlessman Family Legacy Fund c/o Erie County Community Foundation, 135 E. Washington Row, Sandusky, Ohio 44870, or the University of Michigan Alumni Association, 200 Fletcher St., Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109-1007.
Visitation is Monday, July 7, 2025 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 106 Scheid Rd., Sandusky, Ohio 44870 with Pastor Stacy Lauer-Scovanner officiating.
