David Arthur "Capt. Dave" Watts, 85, of Rose Haven, passed away on February 15, 2025, at his home. Born on July 12, 1939, in Camden, NJ, he was the son of Elizabeth (Johnston) and Alton Parker Watts. Dave grew up in Baltimore, Camden, and Washington, D.C., where he attended Hine Junior High and Eastern High School.
In 1971, Dave was working for Thompson's Dairy of Washington, DC when the plant closed and all workers were dismissed. As the head of a young family of six, he took a huge chance, acquired a boat from an uncle, and embarked on a new career as a full-time waterman. Crabbing became not only his profession, but his favorite pastime. He crabbed long hours, often with his sons on board, and worked longer hours peddling and delivering his catch. Through lots of hustle and charm, Dave's market and clientele grew, and the business expanded. He partnered with his brother-in-law, Joseph Berry, in 1978 and opened Pop's crab house in Landover Hills, MD, which they operated until 1995. Dave also enjoyed playing cards and sharing drinks with friends during happy hour.
He is survived by his beloved wife Susan Kathleen Watts of Rose Haven; his children Sharon Elizabeth Watts of Fairhaven, Daniel Joseph Watts (Catherine) of Dunkirk, Kenneth Paul Watts (Francine) of Tracy's Landing, and John David Watts of Fairhaven; brother-in-law George Flemming of Montana; nine grandchildren Tara, Kelly, Colton, Ian, Haley, Mary, Laurin, David and Finn; six great-grandchildren, a niece, and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Alton and Elizabeth Watts, and his sister Martha Flemming.
