Copenhagen – Dawn M. Petrus, 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, June 12, 2025, with her loving family by her side.
A private burial will be held at the Lowville Rural Cemetery, where she and her husband will be laid to rest.
Dawn was born in Lowville on April 19, 1943, the daughter of the late Gerald and Anne “Peggy” Benton Gudridge. She was a graduate of Copenhagen Central School and dedicated many years working as part of the cafeteria and custodial staff for the Copenhagen Central School District. Alongside her work at the school, Dawn's late husband, Stephen, established his barbershop in their home. Together, they were deeply committed to serving the residents of their cherished hometown of Copenhagen.
Dawn Gudridge and Stephen Petrus married in 1962 and shared 62 wonderful years together. They had a beautiful life filled with simple joys. You could often find them playing cards, enjoying long bike rides, exploring flea markets, and warmly welcoming visitors into their home. Their beloved dogs were also a constant source of happiness for them. In their retirement, Stephen purchased a winter home in Florida, which they both enjoyed for 16 years.
She had a passion for knitting, reading, and collecting little treasures such as coins and jewelry. She will be dearly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
She is survived by two sons, a daughter, two sisters, a brother, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dawn is predeceased by his parents, Gerald and “Peggy” Gudridge, a son, who passed from cancer in 2019; an infant daughter who passed at birth; and three brothers.
