Dawn Sheeley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home, Inc. - Kingston on Feb. 3, 2025.
Dawn Marie Sheeley, of Kingston died at her home on Saturday February 1, 2025 with her husband and family at her side in the care of Hospice. Born in Amsterdam, NY December 29, 1951 and was raised in Owego, New York. A daughter of the late Duane and Eleanor M. (Vertucci) Clairmont.
After graduation from High School, Dawn graduated from Hudson Valley Community College and SUNY Cortlandt University. She was employed by The YMCA of Kingston for twenty nine years as the Director of Aquatics and Gymnastics until her retirement. She was most proud of the accomplishments of her gymnasts and close relationships she had with each of them. She greatly appreciated the dedication and support of their parents and those who volunteered their time to support the gymnastic teams. Dawn was a very talented person who made several quilts and crocheted numerous blankets that she would gift to each of her family members. She especially loved making beautiful handcrafted clothing, blankets, toys and stuffed animals for all of her grandchildren. Every year she would also find the time to make several special Christmas ornaments for all of the family to adorn on their tree for years to come. She was a dedicated viewer of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, enjoyed listening to a variety of music and loved to read and challenge herself to complete crossword puzzles in the company of her four legged companions, chocolate lab Coco, black lab Daisy and feline Scooter.
Surviving are her husband, John H. Sheeley Jr. Step Children; John O. Sheeley and his wife Melissa, Daniel Sheeley and his wife Lauren. Carey Howard and her husband Lushauwan. Sister; Vicky Rogers and her husband Rick. Nieces; Emily, Marah, Kamara and a Nephew; Leiland. Grandchildren; Daniel, Danielle, and Jordan Mayo, Zaria and Qualonda Howard, Kyla Frost, Brandon Sheeley, Carmela (Rigaglia) Benvenuti and her husband Michael, Anthony Rigaglia, Tyler and Kayla Sheeley, Cora and Violet Sheeley. Great grandchildren; Sienna Benvenuti, Damien Carmon, Isaaik and Karsyn Rogers, and Nyzire Howard. Beloved friends Corinne and Tom Loeber.
A sister Cindy Coleman predeceased her.
The family would like to thank the staff of Hudson Valley Hospice for all of their assistance, care and compassion during a very difficult time they are truly angels.

Dawn will always have a special place in my heart. She was my coach and boss. I was part of the YMCA gymnastic team for so many years and worked for dawn as a gymnastics and swim coach and lifeguard at the YMCA. The memories we shared and inspiration she instilled in me will live on forever. She was a genuine, kind human being who always saw the best in everyone and coached with care and compassion. Sending my condolences to her family and fond memories that will live on forever in my heart.

I am saddened by this news. My daughter Brittany was Dawn's gymnastic student many years ago at the YMCA. We both just ran into Dawn on December 30th at the emergency room and reconnected as if the many years had not passed. Dawn was telling people there that my daughter was one of her students with such pride and joy. I am so glad we had the chance to see her. Dawn will be truly missed by many. Prayers to her family.

Vickie. I was so sorry to hear about Dawn. I have a lot of great memories when your family would come to Amsterdam to visit your Grandmother Clairmont. You are all in my prayers.
