Dean A. Arvan M.D.

Fairport: January 14, 2025. Predeceased by his granddaughter, Jennifer Arvan. He is survived by his wife, Joan; sons, Steve (Paula), David (Fran) and Ted Arvan; grandchildren, Michael (Leslie), Jimmy and Sarah Arvan; great-grandsons, Connor and Ryan; numerous nieces and nephews.
Dean Arvan was born in Arta and grew up on the island of Corfu in Greece. An exceptional student, he came to the United States to attend Wilkes University after receiving a full academic scholarship. After graduating with a degree in biology, he attended Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia and it was during this time he met his beloved wife Joan, who was a nursing student at Chestnut Hill Hospital. Dean completed his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of Pennsylvania in 1964, followed by a faculty appointment in the Department of Pathology. In 1977, he accepted a position as Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. At Rochester, Dean had an illustrious twenty-seven-year tenure as a clinician, teacher, mentor, researcher, and academic administrator, eventually retiring as Professor Emeritus of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, and of Pediatrics, and Senior Associate Dean Emeritus for Academic Affairs at the School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Dean was a proud, naturalized citizen of the United States. He enjoyed many summer trips with his family at the Jersey shore and loved travel, music, history, reading and gardening.
A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, January 21 at 11 AM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 25 Westminster Rd. Rochester, 14607. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church Attention: Memorial Fund.
