Dean Leland Nims, 93, of Urbandale, formerly of Des Moines, IA passed away surrounded by his family on March 1, 2025, at Deerfield Retirement Community.
Dean was born February 2, 1932 to Harold and Aline (Schall) Nims in Des Moines, IA. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, class of 1950. After graduation, he attended Oklahoma State University on a basketball scholarship and then later transferred to Iowa State University graduating in 1955. Dean married his high school sweetheart, Marcy Carlson, and they settled in Des Moines. They celebrated 72 years of marriage in September of 2024. Dean dedicated over 65 years to the paper and janitorial industry. He founded his own company, The Paper Corporation. He will be truly missed by all.
In addition to his parents, Dean was preceded in death by his wife Marcy Nims, sons, Dwayne Nims, Gregory Nims, David Nims, two sisters, Jean Johnson, Marilyn Nims, and one brother, Daryl Nims. Surviving are his son Stephen (Christine) Nims; Daughter-in-law, Allison Nims; two grand-daughters, Jessica (Aaron) Bennett and Angela Nims; 5 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Per his wishes, Dean has been cremated, and a private family burial will be held at a later date. Those who wish to remember him may make gifts to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
