Deanna “Dea” Scarton was born in Alamogordo, NM to Donald Cain and Anita (Rierson) Cain. She moved to Albuquerque with her family when she was a young girl and lived in the North Valley for most of her life. Dea graduated from Valley High School in 1977.
Dea met Les, her future lifelong love and soulmate in 1970, when she moved in across the street from Les’ family. Les gave Dea a promise ring in 1975, and he kept that promise when they married in September 1978. Together they raised their two children, Christine and Nicolas, along with a granddaughter Nevaeh. In 1978, Les joined the US Navy, where they were stationed in Chicago, San Francisco, and San Diego returning to her childhood neighborhood in Albuquerque in 1986.
Dea’s talent and creativity reached far beyond anyone’s wildest imagination in aspects of arts and crafts, cake decorating, and floral design. Starting her floral career in 1984 on the Treasure Island Naval Base. She is known as a legend within the NM Floral Industry.
Awarded NMWTFA "Florist of the Year” in 2005, 2007, and 2013. She was honored with the Golden Yucca Award in 2009 by the New Mexico State Floral Association as a lifetime achievement recognition for florists who made outstanding contributions to the floral industry and professionals who elevated standards within the state association.
In 2010, She was chosen as one of five professional designers responsible for the design and creation of the NM Hot Air Balloon float in the Rose Bowl Parade where they won the Grand Marshal’s Trophy for most creative design and concept.
Her floral creations were loved by many through countless weddings, funerals, proms, and even TV shows, like Wild Fire, and movies, like Wild Hogs, with some of the top producers and movie actors in New Mexico during her 35+ years. She shared her love of flowers and formed countless lifelong relationships during her time in the business that lasted until her passing.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Les. Her children, Christine and Benjamin Fernandez, and Nicolas. Her grandchildren Nevaeh, Tyson, Wesley, Branden, and Bentley. Her mother Anita Cain, and her siblings, Steve and Sharon, Jeff and Leslie, Ronnie And Lorraine, and Cara and Peter.
Her light lives on in all those who loved her.
Celebration of Life will be held on March 8th from 1 to 5 pm at American Legion Post 13, 1201 Legion Rd 87102. Recognition of Dea’s life by her family and loved ones will begin at 2 pm.
