Debbie Turner, known affectionately as Mom, Nana or Grandma to those who held her dear, passed away on October 22, 2025. Born Debra L. Turner in Rockford, IL, on February 13, 1955, Debbie's life was characterized by her immense love for her family and the joy she found in her flower garden. She also enjoyed craft shows, garage sales, HHS '73 club lunch dates, bunco at Pecatonica library and road trips as well as the every day love of life.
Debbie was a loving wife to her husband, John Turner, whom she married on June 23, 1989. Their bond was a testament to the enduring power of love that guided them through their lives together. Her love extended to her children, Shawn (Stephanie) McMillen and Jessica (Eric) Battles and brothers Doug Covert, Craig (Rose) Covert, grandchildren Mason and Ashton Battles, Ari and Addison McMillen including numerous aunts, uncles and extended family as well as special friends Lucy Keilbeck, India Ballard, Pam Hart, Wendy Mac Adam Gray, Sandy Gilman and Chris Fait who all remember her as a beacon of love and warmth. Debbie enjoyed bowling and was part of the Thursday morning early bird ladies bowling league at Park Lanes as a Darnell Beauty in the 90's. She spent much of her life in the service of others, also working as a cook at Carlson Elementary School until her retirement in 2017. Her ability to create bonds and her attention to nurturing every soul in her reach made her a cherished member of her family and the community where she resided.
Debbie was preceded in death by her father, Jack Covert, her mother, Doris Covert, her brother Mark Covert, her aunt Patricia Darnell and her dog, Ryelee. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and all those who knew her. As we remember Debbie, we are reminded of the quote by Mary Davis: "To remember is to live again. To remember is to embrace the warmth of the heart." We invite you to share your warm memories and upload photos of Debbie on her memorial page, so we may all remember and celebrate the life of this remarkable woman. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to McCorkle Funeral Home in Durand, IL. A celebration of life will be determined at a later date.
