Debra Ward Butz, age 67, of Johnson City, passed away on Friday, June 20, 2025 at Franklin Woods Community Hospital. Debra was the daughter of the late Bobby Ward and her mother, Shelby Deans Ward. In addition to her father, Debra is preceded in death by her husband, James Butz; paternal grandmother, Georgia Ward; maternal grandmother, Elvorena Deans. Debra was a kind-hearted and creative woman who brought warmth and light to everyone around her. A devoted member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church, Debra's faith was a guiding force in her life, shaping her generous spirit and unwavering compassion. She had a deep love for crafting, especially crocheting, and could often be found with a hook and yarn in her hand. Debra had a deep love for her family and friends, cherishing every moment spent with them. She was also a proud cat lover, finding comfort and joy in the companionship of her feline friends. Her heart for service was evident in her volunteer work with the Tennessee chapter of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), where she offered support and hope to those in need. Through her kindness, creativity, and compassion, Debra touched many lives and left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Those left to honor and cherish the life of Debra include her daughter, Jennifer Butz, of Atlanta, GA; mother, Shelby Ward, of Johnson City; sister, Bobbie Lewis and husband Larry, of Elizabethton; brother, Steve Ward, of Johnson City; uncles, Jerry and Randy Deans; nephews, Nick Sanders and Bryan McCloud. A graveside service to honor and celebrate the life of Debra will be conducted at Mountain Home National Cemetery at 10:00 AM Friday, July 18, 2025. Military Honors will be accorded at the graveside.
