Delores Horne Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 18, 2025.
Miss L. Delores Horne, 95, passed away peacefully August 6, 2025, at Ascension Providence Hospital in Waco, TX.

A Memorial Service will be held, at 2:00 p.m. August 22, 2025, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1100 Austin Ave, Waco, TX 76701, with Pastor Leslie King presiding.

Delores was born in Waxahachie, TX, on December 27, 1929. She grew up on a farm and attended a two-room school in Moffatt, TX, through the 9th grade, later graduating from high school in Midlothian, TX. She attended Temple Junior College and the University of Houston before earning her Bachelor of Christian Education in 1956 from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, VA.

After serving as Director of Education at various Presbyterian churches in Texas, Delores was called to serve as a Christian education missionary in Brazil. She answered that call and served from 1966 to 1984. Upon returning to the United States, her ministry shifted to the care and spiritual enrichment of older adults. In 1985, she returned to the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond to update her studies, focusing on ministry with older adults. She went on to receive a Master of Science in Gerontology from Baylor University in 1988.

From 1987 through 2000, she served as Coordinator of Older Adults and Director of Older Adult Ministry at First Presbyterian Church in Waco, TX. She remained an active member and devoted volunteer of the church until her passing.

Delores was preceded in death by her father, L.E. Horne; mother, Blanche Horne; and brothers, Farrell K. Horne and Warren Kenneth Horne.

Affectionately known as "Aunt Sissy," Delores is survived by her sister, Daisy Ann Sohns, and husband, Walter Sohns, Jr.; nephews Richard L. Sohns and wife, Susan B. Sohns, and David A. Sohns and wife, Carolyn Sohns; great-nephew Richard L. Sohns, Jr.; great-nieces Elizabeth A. Teas, Lana E. Blackman, and Jennifer L. Sohns. She also dearly loved her great-great-nephews, who brought her much joy.

Delores had a servant's soul, with God as her guiding light, and she studied His word daily. In addition to being a certified Director of Christian Education, she was an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church. She found fulfillment in volunteering, especially within the hospice community, which she found deeply enriching. A lifelong learner, Delores loved reading all types of literature and took great delight in selecting thoughtful, often intellectually challenging Christmas gifts for her family.

She made Waco, TX, her home from 1987, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, education, and faith.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 1100 Austin Ave, Waco, TX 76701, or online at https://www.firstpreswaco.org/donations.
