Obituary for Dennis James Cahill
Dennis James Cahill, born on October 27, 1938, passed away peacefully, on October 29, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and creativity. He was the beloved son of Evelyn and James Cahill and the cherished big brother of David, Donald, and Dwight Cahill, who have all preceded him in death.
Dennis was a proud father to James Cahill (spouse Joan), Maret Cahill Wicks (spouse Jeff), Lyn Cahill Ramirez (deceased, spouse Carlos Ramirez), and Brendan Cahill (spouse Norah). He was also a devoted grandfather to Tara Bernstrom, Jessica Lawson, Kathleen Klein, Sean Cahill, Andrew Moore, Ethan Moore, Grace Epps, Kyle Wicks, Jordan Wicks, Carson Ramirez, Alanna Ramirez, Seamus Cahill, and Isla Cahill, as well as a loving great-grandfather to many. His family also includes numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
In 1954, Dennis and his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where they became a part of the Mount Carmel parish. They were warmly welcomed by the Hispanic families in the community, who embraced this family from Wisconsin. Dennis fondly remembered how the Hispanic mamacitas took him under their wing, introducing him to their rich cuisine and culture, which left a lasting impression on him and deepened his appreciation for diversity and community.
A respected union bricklayer, Dennis dedicated many years to his craft and was deeply proud of his work. He co-owned a construction company with his brothers called Cahill Contracting and was a fervent supporter of the union. He served as a Tempe councilman from 1992 to 2004, during which he was especially proud of being instrumental in establishing Tempe Town Lake, bringing light rail to the area, and initiating the program called Ensure to Insure. He was appointed as the Director of Apprenticeship Services, reflecting his commitment to education and the future of the trade.
Dennis was also an accomplished folk Irish artist, creating beautiful works in paint, sculpture, and mosaics. His artistic talents brought joy and inspiration to many, with some of his mosaics proudly displayed around Tempe, showcasing his deep appreciation for culture and creativity. He had a passion for fishing and was known as an accomplished card player, often bringing friends and family together for friendly games and memorable moments.
A lover of history and a patriot, Dennis held a deep respect for the Constitution, emphasizing the importance of due process and the values it represents. He often shared his knowledge and passion for history with those around him, instilling a sense of pride in his family and community. Dennis loved his involvement with the sister cities of Tempe, including his memorable visit to the Great Wall of China.
Dennis was known for his vibrant personality and storytelling abilities. One remarkable story he often shared was about how he was kidnapped but managed to escape while wearing only a T-shirt. Another unforgettable tale was about his wallet, which he thought he had lost in 1963 after a long day working on the Maricopa County east court building. Assuming it was gone forever after deciding against searching a porta-potty, he was shocked when, decades later, a construction worker found it in an airshaft during renovations. The worker went out of his way to reunite the wallet with Dennis's family, highlighting the deep connections and respect Dennis fostered throughout his life.
He spent his final years in Bear Flat, Arizona, with his beloved sweetheart, Liz Varney. Dennis's contributions to his community were honored with a senior center named after him in Tempe, a testament to the impact he made on those around him. He loved engaging with his neighbors and friends and found joy in socializing, especially in his retirement where he enjoyed games like Mahjong and card tournaments.
Dennis James Cahill will be remembered not just for his accomplishments but for the love and joy he brought to his family and community. His artistic spirit, vibrant personality, and passion for life will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date and posted here.
