Dennis G. MeLampy, of the Fox Run Retirement Community, Novi, formerly of Farmington Hills, passed into eternal life early Tuesday morning, March 22, 2022. He was 93 years old.
Dennis was born in Detroit on November 22, 1928, to Francis and Agnes (Dropiewski) MeLampy. He attended St. Francis de Sales High School. Following a 1948 hitch in the US Army, he began working at the Detroit Diesel Division of G.M. as a clerk typist. Concurrently he attended Wayne State University's night school program earning a BSBA with a major in Industrial marketing in 1960.
After serving in the U.S. Army in Korea, he returned to Detroit Diesel and was stationed in Indianapolis, New York, and Detroit. His assignments included General Parts Manager and finally, Director of Worldwide Product Marketing and Sales which he held until his retirement from G.M. in 1988.
In 1951, Dennis married his long-time classmate and sweetheart, Mary Louise Tancik. Together they had six children whose marriages were blessed with 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Sadly, Mary Lou preceded him in death on March 1, 2016.
Dennis' employment and hobbies enabled him to make many friends from many walks of life over the years. Hobbies included travel, ham radio, photography, golf, genealogy, computers, and attending his childrens' events. He was a longtime member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Community in Farmington.
Surviving are devoted children, Gale (Ed) Jolly, Bradley (Elizabeth), Mary (Matt) Pappas, Susan Dare, David (Laura), and Carol (Robert) Finn; his brother, Donald (Carol); grandchildren, Chris (Caroline) Jolly, Chelsea (Erik) Tobeler, Haley (Patrick Heiman) MeLampy, Franny MeLampy, Pheiv Kurtz, Katie (Cody) Tolve, Meghan (Kirk) Schumacher, David Pappas, Michael Pappas, Rachael Dare, Henry Dare, Sarah MeLampy, John MeLampy, Joseph MeLampy, Dennis Finn, William Finn, and Topher Finn; and great-grandchildren, Liam Jolly, Stella Tolve, June Tolve, and Mila Schumacher.
The MeLampy family will receive guests at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home, downtown Farmington, on Sunday afternoon, March 27, from 2-6 pm, with a time of prayers and remembrances at 4:00 pm.
Dennis' funeral mass will be celebrated Monday morning, March 28, at 10:00 am (in state 9:30 am) at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 23615 Power Rd., Farmington. Father Walter Ptak will preside.
