Betsy Ukrop Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home - Farmington on Mar. 16, 2026.
Betsy L. Ukrop, age 93, passed away peacefully, Sunday, March 15, in Northville Twp, MI.

Betsy was born in Detroit, MI, September 15, 1932, the daughter of the late Frances and Lazo Rabat.

Betsy was born of Yugoslavian descent and grew up in Detroit, where she graduated from Pershing High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in education from Wayne State University and devoted her professional life to teaching. A longtime elementary school teacher in the Southfield Public Schools, Betsy taught at many schools across the district; her commitment to children and to education shaped the lives of countless students. Her husband, John, also dedicated his career to education as a principal.

Faith and family were central to Betsy's life. A lifelong member of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Birmingham, Michigan, she was deeply religious and active in her church community. Above all, her grandchildren were her greatest joy. Betsy loved to garden, cook, and read, and she delighted in welcoming others into her home.

Summers were spent on camping trips all over North America with her and John's only son, David, and along the way Betsy made friends wherever they went - a warm, friendly presence who seemed to connect with people effortlessly. After retiring, Betsy and John traveled the world together, continuing to make friends.

Betsy will be remembered for her kindness, her generosity, and the love she poured into her family, students, church, and friends.

Betsy is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, John. She is the loving mother of David Ukrop (Jacqueline); beloved grandmother of Andrew (Leah) and Joey; dearest sister of the late Bunny Hoehner and Dash Allen.

A memorial service for Betsy will be April 11, 11 am, Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 1800 W. Maple Rd, Birmingham. Her family will receive guests beginning at 10 am. She will be interred at the church columbarium with her husband, John. Her family will host a lunch immediately following in the church reception area.
