Dennis Springer Moore, 85, died peacefully at his life-long home, in Princeton, Massachusetts, in his family’s loving care, on Sunday, February 25, 2024.

Born in Brattleboro, Vermont, in 1939, he was the eldest child of Peter S.H. and Anne (Densmore) Moore. He grew up in “the Red House,” which was built by his parents at Russell Corner in Princeton, where his ancestors settled in the late 18th century.

Dennis attended Wachusett Regional High School, and went on to Brown University, graduating in 1961 with a degree in English literature. He then joined the US Army Reserve (850th Signal Corps), and spent six months on active duty in Kentucky, mostly playing tennis on the Fort Knox tennis team.

In 1962, he married Anne Joy Cobb, of Camden, Maine, and in 1964, when the senior Moores returned to Vermont, the young couple moved from Worcester to the Red House, where they raised their three children.

During his 40-year working career, Dennis was employed at J.B. Lowell, Inc., in Worcester; the Draper Corporation, in Hopedale; the Norton Company in Worcester and in Welwyn Garden City, England; Tambrands, Inc., in Palmer, Massachusetts; and Sheppard Envelope, in Worcester.

Dennis was a competitive tennis player from the age of five, racking up wins throughout a decades-long career of matches and tournaments in the very active Princeton tennis circuit.  He was a member and officer of tennis clubs in Princeton, Worcester, and Welwyn Garden City.  He served for 40 years on the Princeton Labor Day Tennis Committee.

He spent many summers on the coast of Maine, at family cottages in Brooksville and Port Clyde.

Dennis leaves his wife of 61 years, Anne C. Moore; a son, Benjamin P. Moore, and his two children, Rowan Joy Moore and Silas Benjamin Moore, of Nantucket; a daughter, Damaris Moore, of Oakland, California; and a son, Thomas H.R. Moore, and his wife, Jamie Rotman, and their daughter, Sarah Rose Rotman-Moore, of Shrewsbury.

In addition, Dennis leaves his four siblings: Thomas R. Moore, of Belfast, Maine; Nancy M. Orlando, of Worcester; Peter S.H. Moore, of Oakland, California; and Charles H. Moore, of Arlington, Vermont.

Family reunions have been a tradition for over 125 years, bringing three or four generations of cousins to Princeton every year or two, gathering at the family houses clustered around Russell Corner.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the wonderful caregivers from Trinity Hospice, who made it possible for Dennis to spend his last week surrounded by his family, in the house where he was so deeply rooted.

If you would like to make a gift to honor Dennis, please consider supporting the Princeton Labor Day Fund, the Princeton Public Library, or Trinity Hospice.

A service of remembrance will be held on May 18, 2024, 11:00 a.m., at the First Congregational Church of Princeton.
