Dennis Scott Simonsen, (85) passed away in his home; on Wednesday July 17, 2024 of natural causes. Dennis was born in
Ogden, Utah to Jens L. Simonsen and Ione Russell Simonsen (Probasco). He was raised in Willard, Utah by his stepmother, Irene Simonsen. He attended Box Elder High School. He married his sweetheart Beth Combe on July 25, 1958, and they have been together 66 years.
Dennis joined the United States Marine Corp, right out of high school and served for 30 years reaching the rank of Master Sergeant before retiring from service. He worked during this time at Hill Air Force Base just prior to the birth of his son. He started his career as an aircraft navigation mechanic eventually moving into a supervisory role in the Navigation Instrument shop with 34 years of service in this department that ended in 1993.
He has lived in the city of Clinton for the last 54 years; dedicating his time as a public servant in the growth and development of the city. Dennis was hired as the first City Marshal in 1969 and led the early development of the police force and ended his career as the first Police Chief for the city. He was elected to the city council in 1980 and served for over 20 years. During this time, he conducted several city sponsored projects including the growth of the recreational department's little league baseball program and working with local businesses to develop a world-class little league ballpark complex to support national tournaments. His efforts led to the city receiving one of only two national ASA awards. In addition to this, he helped with fundraising efforts to have a centennial clock tower built in recognition of the city's 100th anniversary. Dennis's lifetime of service included membership in the Clinton Lions and Kiwanis clubs; where he was president of the Kiwanis in 1985 & 86.
After retirement he continued his service at Antelope Island as a volunteer for over 16 years. Dennis was a member of the 6th LDS Ward in Clinton, Utah and will be buried in the Clinton cemetery.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Beth; his son, Gary (Camille) and daughter, Chris (Mack);his brother, Charles Simonsen; and sister, Jerene Burbank; as well as nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He is proceeded in death by his siblings, Russell, Pat, Larry, and Karlene. Dennis will be missed by his family and those who he worked with in various city departments and organizations.
