Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bennie Smith Funeral Home - Dover from Sep. 28 to Sep. 29, 2023.
Dereck Wong was born on October 31, 2002, at Nanticoke Hospital in
Seaford, Delaware. He departed this life on September 24, 2023, at the age of 20. He was the youngest of two children.
Dereck resided in
Georgetown, Delaware his whole life. He started his education at North Georgetown Elementary School and graduated in 2021 from Sussex Central High School.
Shortly after graduation, Dereck went into the workforce. His work journey began at Allen's Food where he gained experience in being a mechanic. Shortly after that he left there and went to Perdue in
Milford, Delaware, where he was the main welder. While there he was able to do what he loved and became more experienced in welding. Dereck then had enough experience to do more and went on to work for Diamond Fab in
Seaford, Delaware, where he would weld and fix machinery. He loved his job. Dereck had a dream that one day he would open up his own business but he had to work at Diamond Fab to make that possible. When Derek got the job, he was so excited because it meant that he was one step closer to his dream.
Dereck went to church on a regular basis but stopped going after the COVID-19 shutdown down but he still had so much faith in Jesus. Every day he walked out of the house he would ask his mom for her blessing. Dereck was baptized and did his first communion in the Catholic Church but he was a boy who didn't really care if you were Christian, Catholic, or any other religion. He thought everything came down to one thing, Jesus and that's all that mattered.
Dereck loved to wrestle from a really young age. He would wrestle with his sister and even broke some things, but Dereck was so passionate about wrestling that he went on to wrestle in middle school and in high school. He won a state competition one day and we were so happy and excited. He also played football when he was in middle school and in high school. He would practice the plays and got better each time because Dereck was the type to never give up.
Dereck loved to spend his days fishing when he wasn't working or at school. Every day after school or work he would ask my dad to go fishing because it was his hobby. He loved to play with his dog, Coco and would talk about him every chance he got. Dereck loved to swim after a hard, tiring day at work. Dereck always was so welcoming and if you got to meet him, he always had a smile for you. He loved to crack jokes. Dereck had a way of making people comfortable. He had a very big heart and anyone who knew him knew that he would always try and give to the poor or if not, he would buy them some food.
Dereck leaves a legacy, to always look at life in a positive way, laugh and smile when you can even through the hard times. If you got to meet him you know his smile was one of the brightest smiles that would light up the whole room. If you ever got the chance to meet Dereck you know his dreams were big and that he worked so hard to accomplish them. He was almost there.
Dereck will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
