Derek Caliendo of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 51 from cancer, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, selflessness, and unwavering love. His warm smile, genuine interest in others, and ability to make people feel valued turned strangers into friends.
A devoted husband to Kristin for nearly 20 years, Derek was a pillar of love and support for his family. He was an engaged and enthusiastic father, sharing his passion for music, sports, and adventure with his children, Addison and Leif. With Addison, he coached her in track, strengthening their bond through runs, daddy-daughter outings, and cozy nights watching their favorite shows. With Leif, he nurtured a shared love for fitness, biking, cars, and outdoor exploration. More than a father, Derek was their mentor, cheerleader, and best friend. A lifelong athlete, he found joy in golf, cycling, triathlons, and pushing his own physical limits.
Derek was deeply loved by his parents, brother, and sister, who remember him as the bright light of the family. Known for his humor and ability to bring joy to every moment, his selflessness and warmth left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
As General Manager at the Desert Mountain clubs, Derek was admired for his integrity, professionalism, and ability to foster a culture of respect and care. He was a role model for his employees who admired his leadership style and natural ability to connect with people. His leadership was built on mutual respect, genuine care, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, making a lasting impact on everyone he worked with.
Derek's life was a testament to love, faith, and generosity. He gave fully, lived joyfully, and inspired all who knew him. His presence was a gift, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
He was loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure. Derek is survived by his loving wife, Kristin; his children, Addison and Leif; his parents, Paul and Jan; his stepparents, Marylyn and Larry; his brother, Brian; his sister, Jamie; his stepbrother, Cody; his stepsister, Megan; and countless friends and colleagues who felt like family.

Derek was a stand out person in life. I worked with him at the Phoenician in Scottsdale and the Ocean Club/Atlantis on Paradise Island, Bahamas. Derek had an insane work ethic. Staff respected and loved working with him and his skill set was immeasurable. He was the kind of guy that restores faith in humanity.

To Kristin, Addy and Leif: David and I are more than saddened and shocked to learn about Derek's passing. We enjoyed our time as your long time neighbors and loved watching the interaction you all had with him. I know he will be watching down at all of your future accomplishments and triumphs. Please know that we are only a phone call away (and a half hour drive) should any of you need anything.

Paul, thinking of you in this solemn time. My family will keep yours in our prayers. Derek will be missed by all who knew him as he brought such joy to those who had the opportunity to work and interact with him, even for such a brief moment in time.

Derek was the manager of a restaurant in Desert Mountain, where I am a member. He demonstrated considerable enthusiasm for everything he was involved with; the restaurant, the employees, the guests, the food, life. Always friendly and willing to discuss almost anything. Recently he returned to school at GCU where he was not only a student by an instructor; again enthusiasm. We and the world will miss him very much.
