Derek R. Harmon

Derek Harmon, 37, of Fair Haven, died on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 from a sudden illness. Derek was a loving son to Cynthia and Greg Harmon, loving brother to Breanne Ryan, and the world's greatest uncle to Daniel, James and Jack Ryan.
He was born April 17, 1987, in Dearborn, Michigan. In 2002, at age 15, Derek's life was irrevocably changed by the discovery of a massive brain tumor. The lifelong consequences of the tumor altered the trajectory of his life, leaving permanent visible and invisible scars, but did not dim his light or his love.
Derek was a gentle giant. His quick wit and sense of humor brought much laughter into the lives of those around him. He loved his family fiercely.
He had a heart and empathy for anyone who was struggling, a love for animals (especially dogs), baseball, traveling, painting (a la Bob Ross), and the San Francisco 49ers. His heart for his nephews was unmatched. He loved to play baseball, video games, and any other game with them–and they sure loved to play with "Uncle." He would do just about anything for them (short of changing their diapers as babies).
Derek worked for Variety Food Services where he was the money room clerk–of course he'd joke that he was the "Lead Clerk," even though he was the only one. He often referred to himself as a ".com" (a Crabby Old Man), but inside he was sweeter than his favorite Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.
He was a member at First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in New Baltimore where he taught Sunday school.
He is survived by his parents, Cynthia and Greg Harmon; sister, Rev. Breanne Harmon Ryan; nephews, Daniel, James and Jack Ryan; and a beloved family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, uncle Dale Harmon, and cousin Stephanie Harmon.
We do not grieve as those without hope–we grieve as those with the sure and certain hope in the resurrection to new life in Jesus Christ (1 Thess. 4:13).
Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Sunday, March 16, 2025 at Wasik Funeral Home, 35259 23 Mile Rd, New Baltimore.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 17, 2025 at First Congregational Church, 36223 Alfred St, New Baltimore, with visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m.
The Reverend Breanne Ryan and the Reverend Bill Davis will officiate.
Derek's family prefers memorial contributions be made to First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 36223 Alfred St., New Baltimore.
