Derek Riccardo Johnson, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully in his home on October 11, 2025 in San Diego, California at the age of 73. Derek was born in Concord, North Carolina, on June 1, 1952 to the late Johnnie E. and Madie McIlwain Johnson. He lived a life of dedication to his family and had an unrivaled work ethic.
Derek spent 23 years in the Navy during which he graduated from Southern Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree in airport management. He spent 23 years working diligently as a correctional officer at Donovan State prison, where he was known to bring both discipline and lightheartedness to his coworkers and those under his charge.
In his free time, Derek loved golfing, fishing, and cracking the best of jokes at unexpected moments. He brought joy to those around him with his abundant sense of humor and had a quick wit, with which he could learn how to install or repair just about anything within his home. At home, Derek had a love for gardening and landscaping, and he spent countless hours working in his garden bringing color to a previously bleak space. His additional fondness of grilling led to numerous tasty meals and new takes on old favorites.
Derek is survived by his wife, Betty, his daughter, Kimber, and his brothers Aaron, Leonard, James, and Larry. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and all of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
