Derick Amos Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McCoy Funeral Home - Sweetwater on Sep. 25, 2025.
Derick Derrell Amos, 47, of New York City, formerly of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on September 23, 2025. Born on August 10, 1978, in Sweetwater, he was the beloved son of the late Michelle Elaine Brown and Jerry Wayne Carr. Funeral services for Derick Amos will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Sweetwater, TX. Interment will be at Sweetwater Cemetery. Reverend Robert Carey will be officiating the services, assisted by Pastor Marvin Green and Pastor Richard Acuna. A wake will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel of Memories in Sweetwater, Texas. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.

A graduate of Sweetwater High School, Derick studied music at Amarillo College and earned his bachelor's degree in 2004 from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. A stunningly gifted operatic baritone, he performed to acclaim both in the United States and throughout Europe, most notably in Switzerland and Germany. When not performing, he created beauty through food and fashion, providing opportunities for Derick to continue his artistic ingenuity.

With his partner, James O'Tool, Derick explored the world, absorbing music, food, and culture in Greece, Italy, France, Ireland, the Caribbean, Mexico, South Africa, and beyond. His interest in various cultures was further reflected in his mastery of five different languages. Derick was also an avid member of the Beehive. Innately talented and endlessly generous, Derick saw the gifts in everyone and devoted time to helping children find their voices in both Texas and New York. Those who knew Derick consistently remember him as a source of light, intensely interested in the well-being of others.

He is survived by his partner, James O'Tool; siblings Tyrone Amos, Willie Amos, Derek Carr, Kerry Carr, Jerome Carr, Ebony Brown, Trey Brown, and Cedric Brown; aunts Tammie Amos and Marjorie Miller; and a wide circle of extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Michelle Elaine Brown and Jerry Wayne Carr; grandparents Ray Lester and Margaret (Poodlum) Amos; aunts Barbara Amos and Carolyn Williams; and uncle Billy Ray (Todo) Amos.

Pallbearers are Isaac Lopez, Terrence Lopez, Ezra Heath, Jcorey Amos, George Jennings, Royce Jennings, and Bray Amos.

Honorary pallbearers are Quincy Garrett, Marcus Garrett, Jonathan Subia, Wayne Amos, and Michael Amos.
