Derl McBurnett Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Miller Funeral Home on Jul. 9, 2025.
Mr. Derl R. McBurnett, age 87, of Tallapoosa is now at peace. Surrounded by his family, Derl passed away on March 8, 2025. He was born April 3, 1937 in Tallapoosa to the late Joseph Philleatus "Leat" and Ruby Cook McBurnett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years when she passed in October of 2015, Ellen Rose Owens McBurnett; and his sister, Jean Robinson.
Derl was a member of Tallapoosa First Baptist Church. He was a longtime business owner for over 65 years, never minding the hard work or long hours, so Ellen could take care of their girls. He had gas stations, a Dodge dealership, a repair shop and sold used cars. He was a thrill enthusiast, racing cars, motorcycles, skiing and enjoying any outdoor adventure, the faster the better. He was the best family man, loving it most when the whole family was together, it didn't matter if it was for a meal or family vacation. He loved all of his family, and they loved him. His dry humor and genuine friendship will be missed by many.
Derl is survived by his daughters and sons in law, Denise and Craig Ellis and Lisa and Mike Parris all of Tallapoosa; grandchildren, Christina Ellis, Brittney Smith (Jaeson), all of Tallapoosa, Mac Smith (Jaclyn), of Carrollton; great-grandsons, Graeson Smith, Grant Smith and Christian Ellis; great-granddaughter on the way, Evelyn Rose Smith; in laws, Howard Robinson, of Cedar Bluff, AL and Norman and Jimmie Owens of Tallapoosa and a host of nieces, nephews, additional family and many friends.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 10, 2025 at 2:00PM at Miller Funeral Home Dogwood Chapel with Dr. Roland Brown, Rev. Michael Casey and nephew, Rev. Jason Owens officiating. Music will be provided by M.J. Hendricker. Gentlemen serving as pallbearers will be Mac Smith, Graeson Smith, Grant Smith, Jaeson Smith, Shaun Goodwin, Dr. Cole Godwin, Kemp Owens, Kevin Owens, Kregg Owens, Greg Bowers, and Tony Robinson. Interment will follow in Hollywood Cemetery.
His family will receive friends, Monday, March 10th, between the hours of 12:00 and 2:00 PM.
