Devrim Omar Topal

Devrim Omar Topal, 33, passed away peacefully and surrounded by love on August 24, 2024.
Cherished son of Fikret "Figo" Topal and Maria Dolores "Emina" Cedillo, adored older brother of Evrim Topal, and faithful companion of the late Zorro (aka "Toti") the shaggy black dog.
Devrim was a happy person engulfed in love, care, and kindness. Devrim lived with an extremely rare non-hereditary form of muscular dystrophy and was cognitively impaired due to a nuchal cord birth. Despite the physical and developmental issues that would rear their heads, Devrim was always cheerful and optimistic. Even in his last few months of life as he was hospitalized in Northwestern Memorial Hospital, he would always give his family a thumbs up and say he was "Good!" He was known for having a smile on his face wherever he went and cemented his memory in this world as an angel in human form.
Devrim was a fixture in his parents' dry cleaning and tailor business, Devrim Cleaners, in Rockwell Gardens (formerly of Southport Corridor). He was a popular figure in the neighborhood as he and his father would often take lengthy walks for physical therapy with their dog, Zorro. He often remembered people by the nicknames he would give them and loved when people would stop to say hello to him. Although Devrim had a limited vocabulary of a few hundred words, he spoke English, Spanish, and Turkish. He was a passionate artist and a lover of classic and progressive rock music. He and his mamá could often be heard playing Camel, E.L.O, Jethro Tull, and Marillion in the back of the shop.
A celebration of Devrim's life is being planned for what would have been his 34th birthday on November 8th, 2024. Please check back to this website for information as soon as it become available.
