Dick Lon Cayce, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 2, 2025, at his home in
Longview, Texas, at the age of 94. Dick was born on March 30, 1931, in Oklahoma to Lula and Leondius Cayce. He was a longtime resident of Arkansas before moving to Texas in 1992. Throughout his life, Dick served as pastor to several churches in both Arkansas and Texas. After retiring from pastoring, he continued his ministry as a greeter at Walmart on 4th Street in
Longview, TX, where he was known for his warm spirit and kind heart.
More than just a greeter, he became known in the community as "the Walmart man," "Mr. Dick at Walmart," "the Candyman," and most of all, a dear friend to everyone he met. He was proudly recognized as the oldest employee of the Walmart Corporation and celebrated his 20-year service milestone earlier this year.
Dick loved God, his family, and people. He was accepting of everyone he met and always found joy in simple things-like deer hunting, which he continued into his 90s, bagging his last whitetail buck at age 92. He was also an avid Texas Rangers fan and enjoyed watching games on TV or attending in person with his sons Dickie, Gerald, and John, and his nephew, JW Cayce. Fishing was another cherished pastime, especially at his son's cabin on the Ouachita River in Arkansas. Dick was a champion 42 domino player and has been most of his life. For the past several years, there have been numerous 42 tournaments on the first Tuesday night of every month at Dick and Patricia's home, where all the sons and some of the nephews would enjoy a meal, great fellowship and tough competitions would ensue.
Dick married the love of his life, Patricia Cayce, on June 12, 1954. Together they shared a beautiful life and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last year-an achievement Dick often spoke about with pride and gratitude.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia, and their five children: Dickie Cayce (married to Robin Cayce), Cynthia Brackett (married to Randy Brackett), Gerald Cayce (married to Mary Jo Cayce), John Cayce (married to Leslie Cayce), and Charissa Redfearn (married to Julian Redfearn). Dick and Patricia were blessed with 14 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren, all of whom lovingly referred to him as "Pawpaw." He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who admired his deep faith and unwavering love.
Dick was preceded in death by his siblings John W. Cayce, Winona Maurine Martin, Rebecca (Becky) Morris, and his grandson, Maverick Cayce.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, May 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rader Funeral Home. A service celebrating Dick's life will take place at Rader Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 7, at 10 a.m., followed by a private graveside gathering for the immediate family at Rosewood Cemetery.
Dick showed love to all he encountered. His love for his family was unwavering, as seen in the daily calls he made to his children just to say, "I love you." He never missed an opportunity to tell his grandchildren and great-grandchildren how proud he was of them.
One of Dick's most cherished phrases, "I'm praying for ya," was more than just words. He genuinely prayed for-and with-just about everyone he met. His deep love for God and family will live on through the generations he leaves behind.
