Dieter Baeckmann

Dieter Baeckmann passed away peacefully on April 6th, 2025.
Dieter was born in Berlin, Germany on January 2, 1934, to the late Max and Gertrud Baeckmann. It was in Berlin that Dieter met the love of his life, Rita. They began a family and immigrated to America settling in Yonkers, NY, where their family continued to grow.
Dieter had begun his career as a tool and die maker apprentice in Germany and carried his trade to the United States. It was Dieter's work ethic and dedication that led to a successful career and ability to care for his family when they moved to Cairo, NY in the late 1970's.
Dieter was a man of many hobbies and interests. He was a competitive bicyclist who participated in many races in the NYC area, and he continued to ride for pleasure once moving upstate. Dieter was also a dedicated soccer player in clubs in Yonkers and Cairo. Even after retiring his cleats, he loved to watch his sons play soccer and watch games on TV as well. Dieter was also a motorcycle enthusiast, lover of history, harmonica player and enjoyed painting soldier figurines. When he wasn't busy with his many hobbies you could find him sitting on the deck with a cold beer and cigar simply enjoying conversation with family and friends. Dieter lived life to the fullest and brought many laughs and memories to those who loved him.
Dieter was predeceased by his beloved wife Rita Baeckmann and his daughter Regina Baeckmann. He is survived by his children, Brigitte (Robert) Gentile, Peter (Marie) Baeckmann, Thomas (Lucy) Baeckmann, and Eric (Heidi) Baeckmann. Dieter will also be greatly missed by his twelve grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and his sisters Inge and Edith.
Dieter will be fondly remembered as "Papa" and "Opa". While Dieter will be missed terribly by so many, his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
