Dirk Daniel Bak, age 57, of Hinton, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, after a long and courageous three year battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at Sunnybrook Community Church. Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be directed to Edge Venture Ministry or United College Ministry.
Dirk was born on January 16, 1968, in Yankton, South Dakota, the son of DeWayne Alfred Bak and Geraldine Lee Olson. He graduated from Hinton High School in 1986, earned his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern College, and later received his teaching certificate from Morningside College.
Dirk married Amy Blom in Alton, Iowa and recently celebrated 35 years of marriage. Their love for one another only got stronger during his battle with cancer and Dirk would repeatedly say that “Amy does hard things”.
Dirk’s love for his country resulted in him enlisting in the Iowa Army National Guard where he was an Expert 11C Mortarman and Expert 11H Tow Missile Gunner. Dirk worked as the Service Manager at Bak Honda Suzuki Kubota for ten years before pursuing his passion for teaching. He found his calling and taught third grade at Franklin Elementary in Le Mars where he was Teacher of the Year and coached freshman football and middle school track and field at Le Mars Community School. Later, he became an Instructor for the Motorcycle and Powersports Repair program at Western Iowa Tech (WIT) in Sioux City, IA. When that program ended, Dirk founded Dirk Bak Repair, where he enjoyed helping others and working on all things mechanical.
Faith and family were at the heart of Dirk’s life. He cherished time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. An outdoor enthusiast, Dirk loved camping, biking with Amy—including riding in RAGBRAI nine times and had a love for motocross since he was a boy. He also found joy in tinkering in his garage.
At 38 Dirk gave his life to Christ. He said that Jesus was standing on his shoulder and spoke “I died for you, now you stand for Me”. Dirk spent the rest of his life devoted to spreading the gospel and serving others. A longtime member of Sunnybrook Community Church, he was actively involved in United College Ministries and Men of Valor, and also served as chaplain for the Morningside University Football Team where he led Bible studies and spoke into many young people’s lives. Dirk’s unwavering commitment to his faith and community left a lasting impact on everyone who came in contact with him.
Dirk is survived by his loving wife, Amy Bak, of Hinton; his children: Kinsey (Matt) Schiebout of Orange City, Keegan (Trista) Bak of Merrill, and Kade (Corinnia) Bak of Hospers; his grandchildren: Gentry, Colter, Chloe, and Theo, with two more expected; his brothers: Dave (Kati) Bak of Le Mars and Darren (Carmen) Bak of Atlanta, GA; and many extended family members and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, DeWayne Bak and Geraldine Olson. Dirk’s legacy of faith, love, and service will continue to live on through the many lives he touched.
