Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wing Mortuary - Lehi on Jan. 4, 2023.
Dirk William Devey, son, brother, uncle, and loving friend to many passed away on New Year's Eve December 31, 2022. Dirk had been bravely suffering from the pain and complications of a lifelong battle with diabetes and other chronic health issues which eventually brought his life to an early end. However, he left this world while doing what he loved most, spending time with his dad and family.
Dirk was born on February 14, 1969 to Katherine and Larry Devey. A special Valentine's present for his young parents. He was born adventurous. He spent much of his younger years exploring the mountains around his home in
Alpine, Utah with his older brother Scott. He enjoyed camping, fishing, target shooting, and especially Jeep rides up the canyon. Dirk also had a passion for music. He loved playing the guitar and did so from a young age. He could often be found sitting with his guitar in his hands jamming away to rock music. His fun personality was contagious. One of his greatest gifts was his ability to make people laugh and smile.
Dirk graduated from Lehi High School and went on to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Queensland, Australia. He loved Australia! The two years he spent as a missionary were some of the best years of his life. He talked often about his experiences, the people, the crazy spiders, snakes and everything else Australia introduced him to. It was there he developed a sincere love of the ocean. Something he carried with him the rest of his life.
After returning home from his mission Dirk met his first wife Missy Ruble and moved to
Santa Cruz, California. He spent every moment he could in the ocean and enjoyed every minute of it. He later divorced and had to move back to Utah but never stopped loving the ocean and tried to get back to the waves as often as he could.
Dirk dedicated his adult life to serving others as a home health and hospice nurse as well as a CNA at various assisted living facilities. He genuinely loved and cared about the people he took care of and they loved him. This is where he met his second wife Wendy Castlberry whom he later divorced. Dirk focused on and only saw the good in people. This was a unique talent. He truly had the most genuine loving and kind heart. One of the hardest times in Dirk's life was when his health started failing and he had to stop working. He lived to take care of others. That love later transferred into taking care of his parents. After his mother passed away in 2018 Dirk took on the role of caretaker for his father and had done it lovingly and valiantly until his last breath.
Family was an essential part of Dirk's life, especially in his later years. He cared deeply about each and every one of his family members and made it a priority to make sure they always knew he loved and supported them, especially his two younger sisters Kristy and Mindy. There wasn't a day that went by where he didn't call to make sure they were ok and ask if they needed anything. He adored his nieces and nephews and treated them as if they were his. Our family will not be the same without Dirk and his quirky sayings and jokes, endless guitar jamming sessions, and movie binge watching but his legacy of unconditional love will be felt for generations.
Dirk is survived and loved by his father Larry Devey, sisters Kristy (Marty) Bahr and Mindy (Jessie) Oyler and late brother's wife Jennifer Devey Rawlings (Kyle) along with his many nieces, nephews and grand niece. He was preceded in death by his mother Katherine Ann Devey, brother Scott Devey and grandparents from both sides.
