Dixie L. Van Houten

Age 86, passed away on January 8, 2026 at the age of 86 surrounded by her loving family. Dixie was born on October 24,1939 in Elmira, NY, one of fifteen children to the late William and Helen Spencer Comfort. She is predeceased brothers, Linden, Ronnie, Marv, Norm, Corky, Jay, and Vernon Comfort and sisters, Jeannie, Birch, Ruth Sampson, Winnie Struble, Mavis White, Gloria Jordan, and Sherry Theetge. Dixie is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 67 great years of marriage, Robert Van Houten; children, Robert (Wendy) Van Houten, Terri Van Houten, and William (Kimberly) Van Houten; 8 beloved grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; brother, Dale (Bonnie) Comfort; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and a large and loving extended family. Dixie loved children and was a teacher's aide at Pine City School for many years. She was very loving, caring, selfless person with a wonderful sense of humor. Dixie loved hummingbirds, enjoyed ceramics, flower gardening, crossword puzzles and most of all time spent with her cherished family. Family and friends will be received at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Elmira/Southport NY 14904 on Friday, January 16, 2026 between the hours of 12 (noon) – 1 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 1:15 p.m. She will be laid to rest at Woodlawn National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
