Dolores “Dee” J. (Scott) Sprague, 93, of Laurel, MD, passed away Thursday, November 9, 2023, at Montgomery MedStar Hospital in Olney, MD.
Dee was born March 11, 1930, in Sparrow’s Point, Baltimore, MD, and was the daughter of the late Maynard G. and Eva Lee (Pingley) Scott. She grew up in Elkins, WV, where she was raised by her maternal grandparents, Floyd and Levina (Rosencrance) Pingley, after her parents’ deaths.
Dee graduated from Elkins High School and moved to Pittsburgh, where she worked for Blue Cross until meeting her husband of 70 years, Warren “Bill” C. Sprague. They married in Elkins in September 1949.
Together, they lived in Pittsburgh, PA; Los Angeles, CA; Irwin, PA; and High Point, NC. After retiring, they moved to Williamsburg, VA, and later to Waynesboro, PA, where they lived for over 20 years. Dee moved to assisted living in MD in the spring of 2022 to be closer to her only child and her family.
Dee was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. She excelled in creative talents and was known for her ability to pick up new artistic skills quickly. She was self-taught in many artistic endeavors. Dee loved to make things by hand, including knitting, crocheting, and making jewelry. She was a prolific artist, painting in oils and especially fond of painting flowers. Her love of flowers extended to her gardens, where she planted hundreds yearly. Her talents also lay in the culinary arts, and she always had at least two different types of homemade treats available for dessert.
Dolores was predeceased by her husband, Warren, and her sister, Clarabell (Pingley) Folks. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Sprague) Hanson, and her husband, David, of Laurel, MD; a grandson, William Alexander Sprague Hanson of Idaho Falls, ID; a niece, Lynda (Folks) Davis of Virginia; a cousin, Sandra Jennings of North Carolina, and two nephews, Bob and Tom Mahnken of Massachusetts.
Memorial donations may be made to the Antietam Humane Society of Waynesboro, PA.
