Dominic James Smith

We are saddened to share the devastating news that Dominic James Smith passed away peacefully at home on July 13, with his beloved wife at his side and dear family and friends surrounding them with love.
Dominic was most happy spending time with his family, loving and being loved by his wife Alexa and beautiful daughter Sydney. But Dom lived a life of service to all: the community, his friends, and his family, and found fulfillment when sharing his time, talents, spirit, and humor with anyone in need.
In 1993 Dom began a long and distinguished career as a firefighter and paramedic in the cities of Poway, Oceanside, and Santa Monica, ultimately retiring from Santa Monica Fire Department in March of 2023. The number of lives he touched in service to these communities is dwarfed only by the impact he had providing help to friends and family with projects, problems and support.
Throughout his life, Dom built authentic connections with numerous communities: firefighters, Land Cruiser enthusiasts, neighbors, travel pals, and surf buddies. Anyone who connected with Dominic felt the impact of his genuine interest in their happiness and well being, and witnessed the joy he experienced from helping others with anything - both small and large.
In so many ways, Dominic was generous with his time and spirit, and truly lived to help others live their best life. Whether he was helping a neighbor with a DIY fix at home, working with a fellow "cruiser nerd" on a major renovation project, or helping his darling daughter Syd with a project for school, Dominic was openly and generously sharing his love, joy, and talents.
Survived by the love of his life, Alexa, their daughter Sydney, and mom, Veronica Murphy, dad, Douglas Smith, 6 brothers, 3 sisters, nieces, nephews and countless cousins, friends and firefighters. Dominic was an absolutely unique man, who will be missed by all. The world is a lesser place for our loss.
