Don Hawkins passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 26th, with his daughters by his side. Born on April 18, 1937, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Patricia "Pat" and Oscar Hawkins, Don was the middle child of three, growing up alongside his older sister Janet (Childs) and younger brother Dick. In 1945, the family made
Boise, Idaho their home-a place Don would grow to love and help shape in countless ways.
A proud graduate of Boise High School's Class of 1955, Don married Rilla Yount in November 1959. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised three children: Debby Sloan (Randy), Riley, and Darla Wright. Don was a loving grandfather to Tiffany Waggoner (Nick), Megan Sloan (Ryan Hedrick), and Haylie Wright, and a caring great-grandfather to Maddi and Colby Waggoner. After Rilla's passing in 1996, Don found love again with Marilyn Richards, whom he married in 1998; they remained together until her passing in 2022. Their blended family grew to include Marilyn's daughter, Darcy Shefstall, who became a beloved "new" daughter and sister.
Don's professional journey began in February 1960 with Albertsons, where he played a pivotal role in launching the company's trucking division, produce and grocery distribution centers, and dairy operations. His dedication and work ethic were unmatched, and he retired in 1998 as a respected leader in Dairy Operations.
Beyond his career, Don was a proud member of Scottish Rites, Masonic Lodge No. 60, El Korah Shrine Players, and an honorary member of the Jackass Patrol. He also served with the Vista Lions Club and the York Rites of Boise.
Don's intellect remained razor-sharp throughout his life. He had an amazing memory, able to recall names, dates, and stories with uncanny precision. Even in his later years, he could complete Sudoku puzzles in pen. His mental agility was a source of awe and admiration to those around him, and he continued to impress family and friends with his cleverness and clarity until his very last breath.
Don's personality was magnetic-his warm smile, quick wit, and encouraging spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He cherished time with family and friends, never missing a celebration or a chance to share a laugh, even if you ended up being the star of the joke. In his younger years, he was known for neighborhood horseshoe games, backyard BBQs, and the legendary neighborhood water fight that concluded with a water hose in the house. In later years, he found joy in his weekly card games at Gil's K-9 and cribbage games; both with lifelong friends.
A passionate BSU Broncos fan, Don could talk football for hours. He was also known for his refined palate-favoring escargot and prime rib while skillfully avoiding any vegetables. His spoonerisms were a family treasure: "Shew Nirt" and "Erry-May Istmas-Cray!" at Christmas, and playful nicknames like "Tiley Rhomas," "Sebby Due," and "Jarla Dane." And the family favorite, "Tar Bender, I'll have a Bouble Dourbin!"
His legacy is one of deep love, unwavering pride in his family, and friendships that stood the test of time. Don lived fully, loved deeply, and leaves behind family and friends forever grateful for his presence.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Truewood Assisted Living and the team at Harrison Hope Hospice for their exceptional care.
A Celebration of Don's Life will be held at 3:00 pm on November 14, 2025, at Waters Edge Event Center, 287 East Shore Drive, Eagle, Idaho.
