Dona Lee Vanderby, the daughter of Loyd and Irma (Winter) Barie, was born on September 8, 1942, in Wisconsin Township near Alpha, MN. Dona graduated from Superior High School in IA and then took home courses for upholstery school for two years. Just after high school, Dona met the love of her life, Allen Vanderby, at the People’s Café in Esterville, IA. They were united in marriage on October 1, 1961, in Superior, IA at United Methodist Church. To this union three children were born, Terry, Tammy, and Tanya.
Dona worked hard all of her life. She worked at People’s Café in Esterville, Berkley’s in Spirit Lake, Montgomery Wards in St. Paul, Fingerhut in Alexandria, and 45 years as an owner/operator of Dona’s Upholstery in Osakis. Dona kept busy when she was not working at the upholstery shop, by baking, playing cards, drinking coffee with friends and her coffee buddy Diane Chouanard, crossword puzzles, camping, and an occasional trip to the casino. Dona made quilts and blankets for most of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also cross-stitched beautiful scenes for her family to enjoy as well. However, spending time with her family was Dona’s favorite pastime. She loved having the grandkids stop in for visit. She will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her.
Dona L. Vanderby, died on Thursday November 24, 2022, at Alomere Health in Alexandria at the age of 80 years old. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Allen Vanderby of Alexandria (formerly of Osakis); children, Terry (Denise) Vanderby of Glenwood, Tammy (Larry) Gettel of Osakis, and Tanya (Dane) Hagen of Alexandria; eight grandchildren, Nathan (Andreea) Vanderby, Travis (Bailey) Vanderby, Tyler Vanderby, Jeffrey Soupir, Jocelyn Gettel, Evan Gettel, Lexi Hagen, and Mariah Hagen; eight great grandchildren; Nicholas, William, Bryson, Case, Ava, Declan, Easton, and Brynlee; brother, Dennis (Judy Klemm) Barie; sister-in-law, Joan Barie; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dona was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Jeremy Gettel; daughter-in-law, Bernice Vanderby, and her brother, David Barie.
A visitation will take place on Monday, November 28, 2022, from 4-7 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
A Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at 11 AM at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jonathan Jahnke officiating.
Interment will be in Nelson Cemetery.
Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home and Crematory.
