Donald Baker Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Grace Memorial - Smith Chapel - Port Huron on May 28, 2024.
Donald Eugene Baker Sr., 83, of Port Huron, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on May 28th, 2024. He was born on December 2, 1940, in Avoca, Michigan, son of the late Clellan and Evoline Baker.
He spent his childhood in the hills of North Carolina running through the tobacco fields until the family eventually moved to Lakeport, Michigan. He often shared the story of his first job as he rode on the back of the milk truck which delivered milk to the households of Lakeport in the early morning hours. Don married Karen Gierman on August 18th, 1962 and they enjoyed 61 years of marriage together. He held a long-standing career as an auto mechanic working for Lakeport Auto for many years until he eventually opened his own business Baker's Auto. Don was well respected; many came from miles around just to have their car repaired by him. In his retirement, he took on the job of driver for The Salvation Army during their Red Kettle campaigns, something he truly enjoyed. When he wasn't working, Don could always be found at every sporting event that involved his children and grandchildren. Rain or shine, he could always be seen walking to the field with his lawn chair in hand.
Don is survived by his beloved wife, Karen; his children, Donald (Debbie) Baker, Matthew (Monica) Baker, his grandchildren; Shelby (Kyle) Larson, Courtney (Karter) Huber, Sarah (Spencer) Scahill, Katie Baker, Nina (Bryan) Snyder, Chad Sanders (Sarah Prange); along with several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Marlene Baker; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Jack Baker. A private memorial service will be held at a later time. The family would like to thank the staff at Medilodge Port Huron and Hospice for the care that he received. Arrangements were entrusted to Grace Memorial-Smith Chapel 1525 Hancock Street, Port Huron, Michigan 48060.
