Donald Duane Bitzan, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on October 28, 2023, surrounded by his loving family, at St. Williams Living Center in Parkers Prairie, Minnesota.

Born in Minneapolis on May 24, 1928, Don was the son of John and Josephine (Plettl) Bitzan.  Graduating from Brandon High School in 1946, Don discovered his passion for music, playing various instruments. He was an accomplished trumpeter, trombonist, guitarist, and vocalist. Don's musical talent led him to perform with various prestigious “Big Bands”, including his very own, the "Blue Knights." He entertained countless people at wedding dances and local venues throughout Minnesota.

During a dance in Millerville, Don met the love of his life, Mildred Thoennes, who would become his devoted wife. The couple exchanged vows on September 28, 1949, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Urbank, MN, embracing a lifelong journey of love and raising their 13 children.

Don farmed a few years before becoming a Standard Oil Agent, delivering oil to farms and gas stations. After his retirement, he began selling and repairing Electro Lux vacuum cleaners for about 20 years.

In his earlier years, Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, and bowling. He had a real love for all of the family’s dogs.   He was an active member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.  Don was lifetime member with the Knights of Columbus and 15 years of volunteer service with the Brandon Fire Department.

Don leaves behind a legacy of love and wisdom. He is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Mildred Bitzan; children: Gregory Bitzan, Kathy (John) Weber, Patricia Bitzan, Don Bitzan Jr., Jean (Tom) Singerhouse, Larry (Teresa) Bitzan, John Bitzan, Mary (Dan Olson) Bitzan, Jerry Bitzan, Doug  (Dawn) Bitzan, Robert (Dawn) Bitzan, Joe Bitzan, and Jen (Steve) Michels. He also leaves behind 21 cherished grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his granddaughter Mandi Bitzan, his great-grandson Grant Mooney, sisters, Beatrice and Loretta, and his brother Gerald.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 3, 2023, at 11:00 am at St. Ann's Catholic Church, followed by his burial at the church cemetery.

A visitation will take place on Thursday, November 2, 2023, from 4-7 PM with a 4 PM Parish Prayer Service at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.  A visitation will continue one hour prior to the mass on Friday at the church.

"Work hard and be nice to everyone" were the life lessons Don imparted to his loved ones. May we honor his memory by living our lives with the same dedication and compassion that he displayed. Rest in peace, dear Don, knowing that your legacy will continue to inspire us all.

A special thanks to the Hospice of Douglas County and St. Williams Living Center for their awesome and loving care of Donald.
