Donald R. Coffey

July 2, 1935 – February 1, 2026

Donald Raymond Coffey, known fondly as Don, passed away peacefully at his home in Greeley, Colorado, on February 1, 2026, at the age of 90.

Don was born in Bloomington, Illinois, to Ammen Roscoe Coffey and Frieda Bertha Coffey (Wolff). An only child, he was raised with a strong sense of family and hard work – values that guided him throughout his life. After graduating from Bloomington High School, Don proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Tokyo, Japan, where he spent two years and developed an admiration for the culture and a lifelong passion for travel.

Upon returning home, Don married Lois J. Smith, and together they welcomed their daughter, Karen Lynn. The family later settled in Greeley, Colorado, where Don built both a career and loving home. In later years, Don married Cheryl C. Harris, and they made their home in Arvada, Colorado. Together they welcomed their daughter, Julie Maxine, into a blended family that included Cheryl's children, Denean, Dory, and Chad Martin.

Don took great pride in his accomplished career as a heavy equipment operator. He was a dedicated member of the International Union of Operating Engineers and contributed his skill and precision to many major Colorado projects, including the Eisenhower Tunnel and Denver's 16th Street Mall – enduring landmarks that stand as a testament to his craftmanship.

Known for his unique wit and unmistakable sense of humor, Don found joy in life's simple pleasures – bowling with friends, pheasant hunting, camping with his family, and four-wheel driving in Colorado's mountains. He had a special fondness for his Airedale dogs, who were his loyal companions over the years.

A passionate sports fan, Don enjoyed watching his favorite teams – the Denver Broncos, Chicago Bears, Colorado Rockies, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, and the "Cubies" – and took pleasure in following the players and teams each season.

He created cherished memories with his daughters. Among their favorite memories were motorcycle rides to Estes Park and spending time touring the Hawaiian Islands with Karen and Cheryl. His love of adventure led him and his family to explore Alaska, Canada, Barbados, and Panama – always eager to experience the world and meet it with a spirit of curiosity.

More than anything, Don will be remembered as a kind, thankful, and easygoing man – someone who taught his daughters the importance of loyalty, laughter, and following one's dreams. His presence, warmth, and wisdom will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Don is survived by his daughters, Karen and Julie; his stepdaughters, Denean and Dory; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Ammen and Frieda Coffey, his wife, Cheryl Coffey; his grandson Darin Weidert, and his stepson, Chad Martin.

A memorial service to celebrate Don's life will be held on Monday, February 16, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Lighthouse Family Mortuary, 3600 W 22nd St, Greeley, CO 80634.

Those who knew Don will remember him as a good man with a generous heart, a quick smile, and a life well lived. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

I regret that I was not able to find my dad and just talk to him about what he's like. And any thing that I should know about his life and tell him about my life. All I have are some pictures that I was given by my mom with him and me and my brother camping in the mountains. That's all the memories I have at hand I do wish I would have gotten to know him.
