Don Day, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2024, after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family. He was 91.
Don was born February 13, 1933 and raised in Salinas, CA, where he spent his entire life. He graduated from Salinas High in 1950, excelling in both baseball and basketball. Following his graduation, he attended Hartnell Junior College for two years before serving two years in the Army. After completing his service, he earned his degree from San Jose State University in 1956.
Throughout his life, Don was dedicated to his career as a produce salesman, a profession he pursued until the age of 84. In 1959, he married Karen Decker, his soulmate of 60 years. Together, they raised their two children, Brian and Lisa, and shared a deep love and commitment to the family.
Don was actively involved in his children's lives, coaching Little League and sharing his passion for golf and tennis with them. This love of sports continued into his later years, with golf becoming his true passion. He was a proud member of the Salinas Golf and Country Club, where he spent countless days enjoying the game with his family and friends.
One of Don's greatest joys was hosting the family's annual Christmas party, where he warmly welcomed every guest with his trademark greeting, "how you doing" and ensured everyone felt at home. This cherished tradition lasted for over 25 years and created lasting memories for all who attended.
Don was preceded in death by his beloved wife Karen in 2019, and his parents, Annie and Glenn Day.
He is survived by his son Brian, daughter Lisa, three grandsons, Thomas (Stephanie), Scott (Alyssa), and Ross, as well as four great-grandsons, Sebastian, Jack, Mika, Charlie, and one on the way.
A celebration of Don's life will be held on Saturday June 15, 2024, from 12-3 at his home, where friends and family are invited to share their favorite "Dandy Don" stories and memories.
In lieu of flowers or donations, Don would want his friends and family to spend and cherish time together.
