Donald E. Emig was born October 28, 1939, in Abilene, the son of Harold Leroy and Edna Mae (Felbush) Emig. On May 2, 2025, Dons Lord and savior said, "Hello Don, it's time to come home". Don left his earthly body peacefully with his family by his side at Memorial Hospital. Don grew up in the Carlton and Holland communities attending Carlton and Scotia grade schools. Graduating from Dickinson County Community High School, Chapman, with the class of 1958. Earning letters in track for four years and two in cross country, running on the first cross country team at DCCHS.
After graduation he worked for Martin and Ade Dirt Construction, Gypsum, and Naturich Mills, Abilene. Don served in the Army National Guard from 1962-1968 earning excellent sharpshooter and crane shovel operator awards. Don instilled how to work hard, play hard and give it your all as he raised his family on the dairy farm west of Abilene. Together, milking cows, working the fields, sweating, freezing, long days, a few thrown wrenches and a few choice words we survived (Thanks Dad). Let's not forget the endless support on the ball fields and our friends.
As fate would have it, Don asked Linda to double-date his best friend. It was love at first sight even though they were dating each other's best friend. Always double dating, finally Don asked Linda for a date and as they say the rest is history. After three years of courtship Don and Linda were married, Dec 9,1962 at Mt. Pleasant Church of rural Abilene. His beautiful wife of 62 ½ years remains steadfast on the family farm. Other survivors include his son Scott and Pam Emig of Abilene, and daughter Shelly and Mike Crane of Solomon. Grandchildren Dusty and Jo Emig, Abilene, Kyle and Ashley Emig, Wamego, Shaila and Lacey Emig, Salina, Marcus and Stephani Zumbrunn, Abilene, Tanner Crane and Caitlyn Forsberg, of Abilene. 13 great grandchildren and many card playing, coon hunting, boot scooting buddies. Don is also survived by the Emig brothers, Phil, Keith, Elon and Robert. Don was proceeded in death by his parents and brother Harold.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene. The funeral will be held at Mt. Pleasant church, 1344 Daisy Road, rural Abilene May 8, 2025, at 10:00 am. Memorial contributions can be made to Elsie Brooks Cancer Foundation and may be sent in care of the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW 3rd, Abilene, Kansas 67410.
