EAST HERKIMER – Donald A. Emrich, age 96, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, August 6, 2024 at Brookdale Senior Living, Clinton.
He was born on January 4, 1928, in Herkimer, a son of the late Albert H. and Margaret (Sitek) Emrich. A lifelong Herkimer resident, he was a graduate of Herkimer High School. After high school he enlisted in the Army stationed in Occupational Japan, He received his honorable discharge on September 23, 1947.
On July 19, 1952, he married the former Elizabeth "Betty" Skandera in Saint Francis deSales Church Herkimer. They shared a loving and devoted marriage until her passing on November 14, 2012. For over thirty-nine years he worked for Chicago. Pneumatic, retiring in 1987. Don was a member of St. Francis deSales Church, Herkimer and a life member of the East Herkimer Fish and Game Club and a member of the Herkimer VFW and the American Legion in Mohawk. Don will be remembered for his calming kindness. His smile, always made you feel welcomed. He enjoyed helping his friends and neighbors,especially during the winter months. He will be sadly missed, by friends and family.
Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Laure and Richard Sacco of New Hartford, Donna and Marc Snead of Ridgeway, VA, a son Norman Emrich and his wife Jessica of Whitesboro, four grandchildren, Pamela (Shaun) LaPolla, Patrick (Victoria) Sacco, Luke (Oliva) Emrich and Karlie (Nicolaus) Schreppel, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife Betty, he was predeceased by three brothers, Norm, Eugene and James Emrich, and four sister sisters, Marie Murphy, Dorothy Goodwin, Virginia Smithson and Irene MacDougal.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, August 13th at 11:00 am in St. Francis deSales Church, Herkimer. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours at Fenner Funeral Home, 115 Court Street, Herkimer will be on Monday August 12th from 5:00 – 7:00pm. Expression of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to The American Heart Association, 125 Business Park Drive – Suite 106, Utica, 13502, Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post 25, 43 W. Main Street, Mohawk, 13407 or Herkimer V.F.W. Post 4915, 131 Mohawk Street, Herkimer, 13350.
