He was born December 3, 1955, at Elkins, a son of the late Jessie Clyde and Norma Marie Vanpelt Fortney.
He is survived by his five children; Donald Ray Fortney Jr. and wife Gwen of Belington, Brian Fortney and wife Nicole of Dry Fork, Dustin Fortney and wife Amanda of Ellamore, Bethany Fortney of Philippi and Brittany Fortney and companion Nate of Clarksburg, six siblings; Delmas Clyde Fortney and wife Evelyn of Valley head, Jerry Fortney and wife Connie of Valley Head, Harold Fortney and wife Joan of Belington, Billie Robinson and husband Rick of Elkins, Mary Trickett and husband James of Haywood, WV and Janet Louise Fortney Bennett and husband Howard of Junior. Additional survivors include his loving companion; LeeAnn Heckler, several grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother; Richard Lee Fortney, one child; Jeffery Fortney and one great-grandchild.
Donald attended the schools of Randolph County and previously was employed with Coastal Lumber Company in Elkins. He loved to fish, hunt, and dig for ginseng before his health no longer allowed him to do so. He loved his family very much and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Friends will be received from the Talbott Funeral Home 56 N. Brandenburg Street in Belington on Saturday August 16, 2025 from 11AM – 1PM the funeral hour when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Pastor Justin Bowers officiating. Honoring Donald's request, cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Talbott Funeral Home P.O. Box 879 Belington, WV 26250 to help with final expenses. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.talbottfuneralhome.com. The Talbott Funeral Home in Belington is in charge of the arrangements for Mr. Donald Ray Fortney.
