Donald E. Getzke, 85, of Newark Valley, NY and formerly Owego, NY, passed away on Tuesday October 12, 2021 at UHS Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, NY. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen (Dickinson) Getzke; His brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Peggy Getzke, E. Frank and Marion Getzke; his sisters, Ardis Hallett, Edna Fidurski; brother-in-law, Raymond Lawyer; and his grandson, Joshua Ogden.
He is survived by his children, Douglas and Gail Getzke, Katherine and William Heroux, Shari and David Nolan, Gwen and David Ogden, David Getzke; his grandchildren, Shannon and Kyle Heroux, Ashley Nolan, Scott and Aarthi Ogden, Aaron and Yousef Ogden, Thomas and Kristi Getzke, Andrew and Nicholas Getzke; his great grandchildren, Adelynn Sweet, Dallas Heroux Neumeyer, Jay Ogden; also his sister, Dorothy Lawyer; brother-in-law, John Fidurski; many nieces and nephews.
Don was born in Nichols, NY on April 9, 1936, the son of Herman and Shirley (Pickett) Getzke. He served four years in the United States Air Force stationed in Iceland and Africa, and was a lifetime member of the Sampson Air Force Base Veterans Association and Tioga American Legion Post 401. Don worked at IBM Owego retiring in 1987 after 32 years, and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. Throughout the 60's, 70's and 80's, Don spent many years working with youth programs including Little League Baseball, Legion Baseball and he was one of the original founders of the Owego Junior Football League. He was also a lifetime member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Owego.
Family and friends are invited to visit at Richards Funeral Home, Rte. 17c West, Owego, NY on Saturday October 16, 2021 from 11:00am until 12:00pm. A Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 Noon with Pastor Joe Wickman from New Life Ministries in Endicott officiating. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, Newark Valley.
