Donald Gish Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sunset Funeral Home, Cremation Center & Cemetery on Mar. 31, 2026.
Donald "Donnie" Gish, age 81, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away on March 30, 2026, in the city where he was born and spent his life surrounded by the people and places he loved.

Born on May 28, 1944, in Evansville, Indiana, Donnie was the son of the late Sylvester and Dorothy (Hyatt) Gish. He grew up with a strong sense of family and carried those values throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his brother, Norman Gish, and is survived by his brother, Dennis Gish, and his sister, Dixie Gish.

Donnie shared 61 devoted years of marriage with his beloved wife, Shirley Gish. Their marriage was a lasting example of commitment, partnership, and love. Together, they built a life centered on family, hard work, and the simple joys that made each day meaningful. He was a proud father to his son, Jody Gish, and a loving grandfather to Greyson Gish, who brought him great happiness and pride.

A hardworking man by nature, Donnie spent his career in Sheet Metal, where he was known for his dependable work ethic and practical skills. He was the kind of man others could count on, and he approached every task with care and determination. His hands were rarely still, and he took pride in being handy and able to fix, build, or improve whatever needed attention. Those who knew him best will remember that he was not only capable, but also generous with his time and willing to help whenever he could.

Outside of work, Donnie enjoyed the things that made life rich and rewarding. He loved motorcycles and appreciated the freedom and excitement they represented. He was also an avid coin collector, finding enjoyment in the history, detail, and uniqueness of each piece. At home, he especially enjoyed working around the yard, and he took great pleasure in riding his lawn mower and keeping everything neat and cared for. These interests reflected the steady, hands-on spirit that defined so much of who he was.

Donnie will be remembered as a loving, selfless, and handy man whose presence brought comfort and strength to those around him. He had a quiet way of showing love through action, whether by helping a family member, tending to a project, or simply being there when he was needed. His life was marked by devotion to his family and by the kind of everyday kindness that leaves a lasting impression.

He leaves behind a family who will cherish his memory and carry forward the lessons he taught through his example. Though he will be deeply missed, the love he gave and the life he lived will remain a lasting source of comfort to all who knew him. Donnie's memory will continue to live on in the hearts of his wife, son, grandson, siblings, and all who were fortunate enough to share in his life.
