Howard Maxey Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sunset Funeral Home, Cremation Center & Cemetery on Mar. 30, 2026.
Howard Cleveland Maxey Sr., known to many simply as Howard, passed away on March 30, 2026, in Evansville, Indiana, at the age of 87.

He was born on January 20, 1939, in London, Kentucky, and carried the values of his hometown with him throughout his life. Howard was a man of steady character, quiet strength, and enduring devotion to the people and places that mattered most to him. He lived a life marked by hard work, loyalty, and a deep appreciation for family, service, and simple daily blessings.

Howard spent many years working at Whirlpool and Holzclaw Trailer, where he was respected for his dependable work ethic and his willingness to do whatever was needed. He later served as a security guard for Sisters of the Poor, a role that reflected his sense of responsibility and his calm, watchful presence. In addition to his civilian work, he served in the Army National Guard in London, Kentucky, answering the call to serve his country and community with honor. Those who knew him understood that he took pride in doing his part and in carrying himself with dignity in every season of life. He was also an avid Chicago Bears and IU sports fan.

Family was at the center of Howard's world. He is survived by his children, Howard Maxey Jr. and his wife Pam, and Michael "Randy" Maxey. He also leaves behind five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; each of whom brought him joy and pride. He leaves behind the boy's mom and his longtime friend Peggy Grisby. Howard treasured the time he spent with his loved ones, and his family will remember him for his steady presence, his warm heart, and the love he showed in both words and actions. He also shared a special bond with his pug, Taterbug, who was a beloved companion and a source of comfort and companionship in his later years.

Howard will be remembered as a man who valued honesty, perseverance, and family above all else. He had a way of making others feel at ease, and his presence brought reassurance to those around him. Whether through his work, his service, or his role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he left behind a legacy of commitment and care that will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

Though his passing leaves a deep void, Howard's life stands as a testament to a life well lived. He was shaped by his Kentucky roots, strengthened by service, and sustained by the love of his family. His memory will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know him, and his influence will remain a lasting part of the family he helped build and the lives he touched.
