Donald John Huey was born August 25, 1942, in Elmhurst, Illinois. His parents were John and Betty Huey. He had three siblings: Mary, Bob, and Nancy. Don was the second oldest. Don died on August 9th, in his sleep. We do not know the cause of death.
Don grew up in Oak Park. He graduated from York Community High School in Illinois. He spent summers on Stony Lake in Michigan, a place very special to him. He met his first wife, Sandra Ludlow, at the Stony Lake store. He was introduced by a friend and shook hands over his "purple people eater" bright purple Chevrolet.
Don and Sandra were married in 1965 and adopted three children together: Ken, David, and Stephani. Don started off in banking but ultimately decided to launch into the entrepreneurial world. He started the successful Animal Ark pet stores. Don and Sandra divorced in 1983.
Don then married Nanette Sandberg in 1985. She entered that union with five children from a previous marriage: Tyson, Esther, Juston, Dan, and Emily. He loved those children as his own and took great pride in being part of their lives. Together Don and Nan had two more sons: John and Spencer. They divorced in 2022.
Don was a man of exceeding love and compassion. He loved every human he came in contact with. He had compassion for animals. He loved to be in the mountains surrounded by beautiful flowers and trees. He was also one of the most honest men we have ever known. Expressing that he will be missed does not begin to capture how much love we have for him.
