Donald Johnson Obituary

Donald Leroy Johnson, 109, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2026 at Meth-Wick Community, where he had resided since 1997. Born March 27, 1916 in Melby, Minnesota to Victor and Blenda (Palmquist) Johnson, Don grew up speaking Swedish at home. His father ran the general store and served as postmaster. A gifted student and athlete, he graduated as valedictorian from Ashby High School before earning his teaching degree from St. Cloud State Teachers College in 1938. Don played on the varsity baseball team all four years he was at SCSTC. Don served his country with distinction in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. He commanded the Control Post for Chesapeake Bay, overseeing convoy passage through mine fields, and served as Communications Officer aboard the USS Iowa. After the war, Don and his beloved wife Phyllis, whom he married on August 10, 1941, built a life together in Cedar Rapids. He co-owned Baranchanu's Steak House for over two decades before managing the Cedar Room at Armstrong's and becoming regional manager for Price Candy Company. In retirement, he mentored small business owners through SCORE. A devoted member of First Lutheran Church since 1947, Don remained active in Bible study throughout his life. He was a dedicated and loving caregiver for Phyllis after her stroke and until her death in 2004. Don was an avid golfer who played until he was 108, thanks in part to the National Disabled Veterans Golf Clinic in Iowa City. He was a longtime member of the Sons of Norway, a Consulting Rosarian for the American Rose Society, and a steadfast Democrat. Don is survived by his sister Audrey (Johnson); his children Peter (Margaret), Tim (Janet), and Linnea (Byron); daughter Ann preceded him in death in 2009. He leaves five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, along with countless friends who cherished his warmth, wisdom, and remarkable spirit. A memorial service for Don will be held later this spring at First Lutheran Church. Donations may be made in his name to First Lutheran Church, Meth-Wick Community, or Kids First Law Center in Cedar Rapids.
