Donald Eugene Ledbetter

May 11, 1942 – August 31, 2025

La Grange- Donald Eugene Ledbetter, 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at UNC Rex Healthcare. He was born on May 11, 1942, in Haywood County, North Carolina, to the late Paul Ledbetter and Fannie Belle McDaris Ledbetter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Sandy Ledbetter; his daughter, April Michele Ledbetter Smith; and his brother, Charles Robert Ledbetter.

Spending much of his life in Haywood County, Donald ventured to Florida for a few years in the early 1970s, where he served as a fire tower watchman for the forestry service. Upon returning to Haywood County, he worked crafting belts for automobiles before answering the call to serve his country. Donald enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he proudly earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. Following his Air Force service, he continued his commitment to his country as a member of the Army National Guard.

Donald had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and often enjoyed time with a fishing pole in hand. A gifted woodworker and artist, he had an innate ability to turn discarded materials into something beautiful. His creativity extended to painting, where he brought to life both his handcrafted works and original artistic creations.

With a great love for his family, Donald was the true head of the household-unless, of course, Sandy was around. His love for family knew no bounds; in 1990, he offered a kidney to his brother in hopes of extending his life. Though typically easygoing with a great sense of humor, Donald was a determined man who believed things ought to be done a certain way and he wasn't shy about letting you know if he disagreed.

In accordance with his wishes, the family will honor Donald's life in a private setting.

He is survived by his daughter, Glenda Wilkes (Tony); grandchildren, Shandle Wilkes, TJ Wilkes, Tina Smith (Joe Stamey), and Johnathon Smith; six great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Gail Wade (Tim Moore), Dawn Knutson (Ken), and June Meeks (Jody); a special nephew, Steve Ledbetter; niece, Cathy Ledbetter; and a host of other nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
