Obituary of Donald Oakley
Mr. Donald Oakley, 89, passed away on Wednesday December 15, 2021 at River Ridge Living Center.
He was born on May 14, 1932 to Mr. Jack Oakley and Mrs. Edith Bauder Oakley of Nelliston, NY.
Don left school at a young age to support his family by working local farms. He later enlisted in the U.S. Army bravely serving his country from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. Following his service Don worked in construction and helped build the St Lawrence Seaway, as well as railroads. Later in life he was a self-employed carpenter who loved working with his hands.
In 1963 Don was united in holy matrimony to Ms. Alberta Combs, they remained lovingly married for 60 years until her passing in 2014.
Don and Alberta built a beautiful life together; they were devout parishioners of the Trinity Lutheran Church and longtime supporters of the Fonda Fair. Don loved history and often volunteered for Civil War Reenactments. He was also a member of the American Legion.
Don is survived by his brother Robert "Bud" Oakley of Fort Plain, half-sister Carol Ann Seeley, nephew Gordon (Diane) Oakley of Hagaman, nieces; Jodi (Jeff) Burton of Mayfield, Kim (Bernie) Smith of St Johnsville, Cheryl (Gordon) Lamb of Caroga Lake, Lisa (Phil) Priollo of Saratoga and sister-in-law Simone Oakley.
In addition to his wife Alberta, Don was preceded in death by parents as well as his brother Stanley Oakley, and sister-in-law Sheila Yeardon.
A private service will take place at the convenience of the family. A donation in Don's memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
