Donald Robert Siegel a native Hoosier, passed away at 89 on July 8, 2023. He was the son of the late Pauline G and Milton Siegel. He was born in Indianapolis on July 11, 1933. He graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1951, Nichols Jr. College in Dudley, Mass in 1954 and Miami University in Oxford, OH in 1956 with a BS in Business Administration.
In September 1956, Don went into the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood where he met his future brother-in-law the late Sanford Schwartz. Upon returning to civilian life in the fall of 1958, Sanford mentioned that he had a sister Rosetta (Rosie), who he'd be glad to introduce him to and perhaps he could take her off his hands. They were married in 1960 and were able to enjoy 42 years of marriage before Rosie passed away in February of 2002. They were blessed with two daughters who survive: Terry (Alan) Harvey of Noblesville, IN and Karen Fielder of Westfield, IN along with three grandchildren, Brian, Kyle and Kelly Fielder.
Don held positions at Burger Chef, Metropolitan Life Insurance and Mayflower Corporation before he opened his own accounting and tax service in 1977. After a 25- year career with Carmel Bookkeeping and Tax Service, Don fully retired in 2001. Though he continued to enjoy preparing tax returns as it was a passion more than it was a job that he enjoyed for nearly 40 years. He also was an avid stamp and coin collector. Other recreational interests that he continued to enjoy over many decades were bowling and doing his philanthropic work in the Jewish community holding leadership roles with B'nai B'rith Lodge 58, B'nai B'rith District Grand Lodge No. Two, the International B'nai B'rith Bowling Association and Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation where he was also a member for 46 years. He joined Congregation Beth Shalom in 2010 as a founding member and continued his membership while pouring over the directory and other Jewish community publications at home.
In addition to his many hours of charity work, he never had enough time for attending Indiana high school and college sporting events with his like-minded adult friends. He was a long time Carmel High School season ticket holder until walking to the stadium and sitting in the stands became too great of challenge. Then he continued that devotion as an armchair quarterback routing for all his favorite teams (IU and Chicago Cubs) well in to the late evening hours.
Graveside funeral services will be held on July 11, 2023 at 1:30 pm, at IHC North Cemetery, 1300 E 161st Street in Westfield, IN. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Congregation Beth Shalom or Dementia Society of America.
The family wishes to thank his personal caregivers Sheila Freeman and Jackie Diersing along with the staff at Copper Trace for their dedicated and compassionate care.
