Donald Smith of Maple Shade passed away at home on August 7, 2025 at the age of 90.
Don found a job during his high school days sweeping up the shop at Suburban Pattern; it would become his life’s work, eventually becoming a pattern maker and enjoying a 43-year career. His craftsmanship paid off in other ways as well: Don had fabricated a boat and a beautiful trailer for fun times in LBI and he’d turn little finds on the side of the road into treasures that he sold at the flea market. He was a strict dad but only because he wanted quality kids. He softened up a little as a grandfather, taking the grands down to the shore, out on the boat and to Disney. He had previously lived in Gloucester City before moving to Maple Shade to raise his family.
The handsome Collingswood High guy would meet a pretty Camden Catholic girl at a Camden dance. Don and the late Margaret shared a 59-year marriage blessed by three children, Mark (Mary) Smith, Christine A. Smith and Paul E Smith; and later by grandchildren, Ian (Cori Flowers), Erin (Adam Morrow) and Sara (Mario Mejia); and great-granddaughter, Margaret Rose. He is survived by his sister, Virginia Pawlak.
There will be a viewing Friday, August 15, from 9-10:30 a.m. at Mark C. Tilghman Funeral Home, 38 North Forklanding Road, Maple Shade. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery, Chews Landing.
