Donald Dean Sobba, 85, of Burlington, Kansas, passed away Monday, December 19, 2022, at his home.
Don was born January 9, 1937, at Harper, KS, the son of Louis C. and Mary C. (Amrein) Sobba. The family lived at Pratt, KS, and Harrisonville, MO, before moving to Burlington when Don was 7 years old. He attended the Burlington schools graduating from Burlington High School in 1955.
On December 17, 1959, he entered the U.S. Army. He served over a year and a half and was a sharpshooter and marksman, and was trained in Morse Code. Upon his Honorable Discharge on March 6, 1962, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal.
On April 22, 1963, he and LeEtta Ruth Rohr were married at Vinita, OK. They became the parents of three children.
He worked for the railroad up until he was drafted into the U.S. Army, for a short time he worked with the construction of John Redmond Reservoir. He then moved to Prairie Village, Kansas and began a long career in trucking. He drove for Consolidated Freight Co. for 32 years. He was a highly decorated trucker winning numerous awards. He participated in many truck rodeos and was a member of the Kansas Road Team in Topeka, KS. Following his retirement, he owned and operated Kansas City Backyard Barbeque.
His wife, LeEtta, preceded him in death on September 1, 2010. Don then returned to Burlington and enjoyed restoring old tractors. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Burlington and was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Prairie Village, KS, while living in Kansas City.
On October 12, 2020, don suffered the loss of his son, Kevin Sobba. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ralph Sobba; a sister, Delphine Sobba; and an infant brother, Marlin Sobba.
He leaves his daughters, Tawnya Knipp (Darrell) of Burlington, and Veronica Hess (Robert) of Gardner, KS; a daughter-in-law, Yasmin Sobba, Yates Center, KS; 7 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brothers, Marvin Sobba (Karin), Overland Park, KS, and Gene Sobba (Mary), Rogers, AR; a sister-in-law, Anna Sobba, Fr. Mojave, AZ; a number of nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 31, 2022, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Burlington with a Rosary being recited at 10:00 A.M. at the church prior to the funeral. Cremation will follow the services. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery at Burlington at a later date.
The family will meet with friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday, December 30, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington.
